Deeply regretting yesterday's oversleeping, I found myself wide awake at exactly 3:30 a.m. this morning. Knowing that giving in to the temptation of going back to sleep would just be a repeat of yesterday's mistake, I pushed my aging body and dragged myself out of bed. First up was my daily routine: deep breathing, followed by a blood pressure check. Systolic 143, diastolic 88, and a heart rate of 69. The numbers had dropped slightly, and I breathed a sigh of relief.
At 4:30 a.m., camera in hand, I headed out for my usual morning photo walk. My destination was the north side of the base, the Runway 18 end. In the eastern sky, a large, deep-red sun was peeking through the gaps in the clouds. Feeling the heavy, clinging humidity in the air, I muttered a soliloquy that no one was listening to: "Looks like we might get an evening shower again."
Upon arriving, I looked through my viewfinder at the parking apron, but there was absolutely no sign of any aircraft. All I could see was what looked like an aerial refueling tanker hazy in the distance. I convinced myself with my own amateur geopolitical analysis, wondering if the talks with Iran had gone well and the transport planes stationed here had already returned to their home countries.
Glancing to the side, I noticed that the hangar near the apron was almost complete. The neighborhood association bulletin mentioned a relocation happening during the summer, so I assume that facility will be for drones.
After trudging back home in the sweltering heat, I sat down at my computer in my second-floor room and started writing my blog. Just then, a strange, loud, and squeaky "screech, screech" sound echoed from outside my window. I opened the curtains and looked down, only to find my wife struggling with a manual push lawnmower. I couldn't bear to watch her unsteady handling, so, rubbing my sleepy eyes, I went down to the first floor and pulled the electric lawnmower out of the shed.
In the end, I was stuck spending an hour neatly mowing the overgrown lawn. Covered in sweat, I finished the job and treated myself to a cold azuki bean ice pop as a reward. Delicious. Then, it was back to my room on the second floor. The sky was mostly cloudy with only faint rays of sunlight breaking through. I have a depressing series of dentist appointments coming up starting at the end of the month, and I wonder if the rainy season downpours will hit again then. Seriously, I just want this rainy season to be over already.
