【English Translation】 August 13th, right in the middle of the Obon holiday, and it is just past 6:00 AM. How is everyone faring? As for me, I am completely at the mercy of the relentless heat and the approaching signs of a typhoon.

Our beloved Yokota Air Base, however, has transformed into a sleepless city. A massive, round-the-clock airlift operation is underway to support the areas devastated by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake.

Seeing the KC-130Js and C-130Js take off for Kumamoto (Takayubaru Sub-base), fully loaded with 16 to 18 tons of drinking water and daily necessities, fills me with immense respect. It is no wonder social media is overflowing with gratitude for their tireless humanitarian relief efforts.

Yet, reality isn't always perfectly quiet. Around 1:30 AM, just as families were gathered for Obon hoping for a peaceful rest, the unforgiving roar of aircraft engines echoed through the night.

Though it is presumed to be for disaster relief missions, it is understandable that some local residents voiced their frustrations online about the sleepless night. Even I found myself staring at the ceiling in bed, praying, "Please, just fly quietly this once..." (which is impossible, I know).

Adding to the tension, a CV-22 Osprey made a precautionary landing (essentially an emergency landing) at Camp Kita-Utsunomiya on August 10th. Details were transmitted from the Ministry of Defense to local municipalities, and naturally, local anxieties regarding the aircraft's safety spiked.

However, I heard that between 4:30 and 5:30 this morning, it finally finished repairs and safely took off from Camp Kita-Utsunomiya. They say a difficult child is the most loved, but I could really do without the heart palpitations.

August 12th marked the anniversary of the Japan Airlines crash. Many posts stood out, overlaying the stories of Yokota Air Base's desperate rescue preparations back then with their current relief activities.

Seeing them fly through the night for Kumamoto today makes me realize that the frustrating midnight noise is actually the "sound of connecting lives." It softens my heart, just a little.

As the typhoon approaches, the base remains incredibly busy with aircraft arriving from other bases and fans watching the sheltering of planes. Delayed passenger flights to Seattle, Iwakuni, and Kadena are finally ready to resume, with rapid work underway to normalize the passenger terminal.

Let us all cherish our ordinary days, wishing for safety in the skies and a swift recovery for the disaster-stricken areas.

[Yokota Air Base Latest Report] Kumamoto Earthquake Support and an Intense 24-Hour Summary

As of August 13, 2026, Yokota Air Base is operating at a highly active state due to the overlapping of disaster relief operations for the "2026 Kumamoto Earthquake" and typhoon countermeasures. The trends over the past 24 hours can be primarily summarized into three points: "Disaster Relief," "Operational Challenges," and "Live Reporting of Arriving Aircraft by Aviation Fans". Here is a summary of the most recent situation at Yokota Air Base.

1. Large-Scale Shuttle Transport for the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake

Currently, Yokota Air Base is operating at full capacity as a crucial logistics hub for the disaster-stricken areas. U.S. Marine Corps KC-130J and base-assigned C-130J transport aircraft are conducting shuttle transports of approximately 16 to 18 tons of drinking water and daily necessities to Kumamoto (Takayubaru Sub-base). On social media, there have been many messages of gratitude and appreciation for the U.S. military's round-the-clock humanitarian relief efforts. Furthermore, as August 12th was the anniversary of the Japan Airlines flight 123 crash, there was a noticeable number of posts comparing the current activities to the episodes of Yokota Air Base's rescue preparations at that time.

2. Local Residents' Voices on Operations and Safety

On the other hand, challenges associated with emergency operations have also come to light.

  • Osprey Emergency Landing: Following the precautionary landing (emergency landing) of an assigned CV-22 Osprey at Camp Kita-Utsunomiya on August 10, the Ministry of Defense provided detailed information to local municipalities, raising concerns over the aircraft's safety.

  • Late-Night Aircraft Noise: Although presumed to be related to disaster relief missions, severe flight noise occurred late at night (around 1:30 AM) during the Obon holiday period, resulting in multiple posts expressing dissatisfaction from surrounding residents.

3. Typhoon Countermeasures and Normalization of the Passenger Terminal

Vigilance against the approaching typhoon is strengthening, and the arrival of aircraft from other bases, as well as the evacuation and sheltering of aircraft, are drawing attention among aviation fans. At the same time, preparations for the resumption of passenger planes and scheduled flights (Seattle flights, Iwakuni/Kadena flights, etc.) that had been delayed due to aircraft maintenance and other reasons have been completed, and work is proceeding rapidly to normalize the passenger terminal.

Title: Sleepless Nights and the C-130J

Last night, at exactly 1:15 AM on August 12th, a deep, resonant bass sound echoed through my window. It was the sound of a ground engine run-up. Opening social media, I predictably saw scattered complaints from neighbors about the noise. It’s true that the frequent takeoffs and landings of the C-130J transport planes can be a bit jarring, especially on a sweltering Obon night when sleep is already elusive. I must admit, I was initially one of those who pulled the blanket over my head and clicked my tongue in annoyance.

However, remembering the news, I changed my mind. The aircraft had temporarily evacuated to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa to avoid a typhoon, and now their return to base was in full swing. Furthermore, just yesterday at 6:00 AM, the 374th Logistics Readiness Squadron (374LRS) had just completed their relief supply transport mission for the Kumamoto earthquake. Coordinating with the Japan Self-Defense Forces' ground transport support, two US Air Force C-130 transport planes had flown to Kumamoto. I heard that they airlifted approximately 16 tons of drinking water (roughly 33,000 plastic bottles!) using aircraft like the KC-130.

When you think about it that way, doesn't that thick midnight engine roar start to sound like "the sweaty sound of overtime work to deliver water to someone far away"?

During the day, while riding the Tama Monorail, I noticed ELMO (Labor Management Organization for US Forces Employees) utilizing social media to advertise job openings for plumbers and electricians. A car dealership along Route 16 shrewdly updated its website to highlight its location as "across from Yokota Air Base," and a local media outlet in Fussa City featured a special segment on a music band originating from US military housing. For better or worse, our daily lives are stitched together with the base's culture and economy like a patchwork quilt.

At 4:30 AM, I woke up briefly and checked the flight tracking system; the aircraft silhouettes had completely vanished from the sky. The peaceful silence unique to the Obon holiday period had finally arrived. I drank a glass of cold barley tea and crawled back into bed, imagining someone, under the distant Kumamoto sky, safely quenching their thirst with that very water.
